How it works

It belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is thought to work by increasing the levels of a chemical in the brain called serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine).

Usage And Safety

Dosage

Depression : Adults : Daily dosing : Initial 20mg every morning. Titrate : Increase dose if no improvement after several wk. Doses >20mg/day , give every morning or twice daily ( morning and noon ) . Max : 80mg/day. Children : >8yr: Higher weight paeds : Initial : 10 or 20mg/day. After 1 wk at 10mg/day , may increase to 20mg/day. Lower weight paeds : Initial : 10mg/day . Titrate : May increase to 20mg/day after several wk if clinical improvemnet not observed. OR As directed by your physician.

Side Effects

Nausea , dizziness , headache , anxiety , nervousness , drowsiness , insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) , fatigue , weakness , diarrhea , upset stomach , dry mouth , loss of appetite , excessive sweating .

Drug Interactions

Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine, moclobemide or selegiline, linezolid, methylene blue) , Thioridazine , other anti-depressants, such as SSRIs, certain tricylics e.g., lithium , anti-infectivescancer drugs , asthma drugs , drugs to treat nausea and vomiting , painkillers , diuretics , anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, dabigatran), acetylsalicylic acid (e.g., Aspirin) and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen) , tamoxifen, certain medicines used to treat patients with irregular heart beats (antiarrhythmics) , certain drugs used to treat diabetes , other drugs that affect serotonin, such as lithium, linezolid, drugs containing tryptophan, St. Johns Wort, triptans used to treat migraines , certain medicines used to treat pain, such as fentanyl (used in anaesthesia or to treat chronic pain), tramadol, tapentadol, meperidine, methadone, pentazocine , certain medicines used to treat cough, such as dextromethorphan , sedatives such as benzodiazepines .

Indication

It has been prescribed by your doctor to relieve your symptoms of: Depression , Bulimia , Obsessive-compulsive disorder .

When not to Use

Do not use if you: Are allergic to it or any of the components of its formulation. – Are currently or have recently taken the drug thioridazine. – Are currently or have recently taken monamine oxidase anti-depressants (e.g., phenelzine sulphate, moclobemide).

Precautions

Precaution

It can cause an acute attack of glaucoma. Having your eyes examined before you take this medicine could help identify if you are at risk of having angle-closure glaucoma.

Warnings

Warning 1

Suicidal thoughts and actions can occur in any age group but may be more likely in patients 18 to 24 years old. Should this happen to you or those in your care, consult your doctor immediately.

Warning 2

Fluoxetine should not be used in the treatment of children under the age of 8 years.

Warning 3

Tell your doctor if any of the following applies to you have epilepsy or fits (seizures) or experience an increase in seizure frequency, contact your doctor immediately; Fluoxetine might need to be discontinued.
